There are a lot of products on the market these days claiming to be greener and safer to use around you home. But the truth of the matter, there is also a lot of Greenwashing going on, this is when companies are stating that they are selling environmentally and public friendly products, when infact they are still selling, well, total crap. As you are on your search to find better products for your home and family, you probably are also looking to stay within a budget since you have little humans to cloth, feed and educate!

If you are looking for getting the most bang for your buck, the best option are to make DIY home cleaners. I know this is not possible for everyone to do, and maybe you are able to make some of the products at home, but not everything. So if that is you, please be sure to read on to get some more reviews and prices on cleaners.

Now, if the DIY route is more for you. You can go straight to DIY Cleaning Recipes to get recipes you can get started on today!

When shopping for greener products there are some chemicals you need to steer clear from:

Chlorine

Formaldehyde

Ammonia

Ethyl Bezene

Triclosan (Dioxin)

Phenol

Sodium Hydroxide

Methanol

Benzene

Toluene

Hydochloric Acid

The easiest thing to do right now, is to search which products you have in your home by using EWG. I was surprised to see some products, like Lysol Power & Free (the multisurface cleaner and wipes) were given a B rating, meaning they are low concern for causing health or environmental issues.

The biggest health issues toxic cleaners can cause are cancer, asthma and hormone / reproductive disruptions, which can cause infertility issues! So, for you and your family, the best place to start, is to research what you are using and what you can find in your price point that you can swap!

I only gave suggestions for the multisurace and laundry since those are usually the most popular items to search for first. However, if you want to get ratings for other products please visit EWG.org. You can choose which cleaner you want to search for (i.e. bathroom cleaners) and a list of the A ratings will pop up first. Also note, there are way more brands than the ones I just listed above for each of these categories. I chose the ones that I found are the most accessible, like in Target and Amazon and in a some-what decent price range! Hope this helps! Continue reading for more recommendations!

Seventh Generation

In my opinion one of the top greener choices, in price and effectiveness, plus high ratings on EWG is Seventh Generation. My favorite thing, other than the price, is that you can get it locally at almost any store now, such as Target. Plus, if you shop at Target, as every mom does, you can save even more money by using your redcard or cartwheel app. They almost always have something of Seventh Generation on sale there! So for me that is a huge deal when it comes to saving money while also buying healthier home products.

Mrs. Meyers, another brand you can find in most local stores nowadays is rated about the same as Seventh Generation. They do not seem to have any A rated products, but most are B, which means that they are of low concern for causing cancer or reproductive disruptions. However, always be sure to check the ratings, as companies tend to change ingredients up which may make the rating higher or lower! This brand is priced a little higher, than Seventh Generation, but they do have some really good products that I am still comfortable using in my home.  They also have seasonal products that come out, which if you are anything like me and love to have the scent of fall, Christmas or spring in your home, than this brand is something to look into! An affordable way to get Mrs. Meyers is through Grove Collaborative. You can also get started with Mrs. Meyers with their FREE 5-piece cleaning set. No scam, you literally get full sized products through Grove when you spend $20- which is easy to do, especially if you are looking to get some greener products in your home!

When I was pregnant I chose to use a lot of Honest cleaning products and I was a bit disappointed when I had seen they were not rated higher. Now, for the record, they are still higher than other things I was using prior to my green cleaning search, so overall, there is worse stuff out there. Although I do LOVE the smell of their white grapefruit prouducts and I do think they are very effective when it comes to cleaning, when it comes to money and EWG ratings, this is a brand I would most likely have last to use on my list.

This is a brand you may not have heard of yet. Personally, it was one I had not heard much about until I started to really pay attention to EWG ratings!  I have yet to test these out, for home or personal products, so I can’t give a full review (yet) but felt it was only right to include here for those of you who want to learn about them on their website http://www.attitudeliving.com. They also have a lot of their products on Amazon, though, beware some look like they are higher priced! So this one might not be as cost effective for you and your family, but quality seems to be higher than others! I am not listing a top product list for Attitude, because almost all of their products are an A rating. You can do more research about them here.

You have probably seen or have this in your home. Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap is a household staple. It can be used for cleaning and personal care. The list of things you can do with this stuff really is incredible. It also is very cost effective because you don’t need a lot of it to do its job! It is also available just about everywhere, from Target to Wholefoods to Amazon! It also comes in a variety of scents, which is great if you are using alone, or making your own products!
